Remember - take time to read (you can speed read) the articles and only print those which will be useful to your research paper topic and thesis. Be sure when you print that the article info (author's name, date, etc) is on the printed article. You will need to find

due Mon, Dec 1- Family interview
Interview two relatives. Remember - the goal is to have a meaningful conversation, not get done quickly.
Ask these questions as conversation starters, jotting notes as you talk. You will NOT have to write an essay. Adjust the questions to fit the person where necessary. You will turn in these written questions and notes.

Under each of these categories, list two ideas of subjects you could do your research paper on

            a) p. 256 - "The Minister's Black Veil" and p.276 - "Ahab" (and skim rest of excerpt) from Moby Dick

contrast the plot of the two writings
            c) contrast the minister and Captain Ahab - their characters, their goals, their philosophies of life, etc
           
dcontrast the two themes of the writings - discuss how these themes can apply to today

due Wed, Nov 5-- Read an article about a current events / world problem that concerns you
            a) Find the article from a reputable news site - nytimes.com, cnn.com, bbc.co.uk, etc. Note: the article must have an author
            b) 
Print the article (if it is too long, just print the first 2 pages. Be sure it is a substantial article (more than 1 page) with an author (blogs or letters will not count)
            c) Write the info about the article (author, title of article, title of source, date of publication) at the top of your report which should include these 2 parts (these can be 2 or more paragraphs; the 2 parts should be roughly equal):
           
1. A summary of the specific points of the article
           
2. Your reaction and thoughts on the points of the article (again - be specific). Your report must be a total of 300 words.

due Mon, Oct 13 -- Creative Writing - Devotional (for list of ideas, see the handout given to you)
A devotional is a creative piece of writing designed to present a thought/idea/story which inspires the reader. Criteria -
            a) must have a title, must be 350 - 400 words
            b) 
must have a Bible text (words and reference - not John 3:16)
            c) email to mosesem@collegedaleacademy.com
           
dbring a "hard copy" (paper) to class (obviously this will be typed because you have already typed it to email it)
           
eextra credit is given if it is chosen to publish in book

due Mon, Oct 6 -- CAREER INTERVIEW
    Your Career Interview must include these things:
    1. Original cover sheet (yellow) which must be complete and have these pieces of information:
            a)  name and phone number of person being interviewed
            b) 
times of interview -- example: 3:00 - 5:00 pm
            csignature of person you interviewed
           
daddress of the person you interviewed
           
e questions you asked and notes you took during the interview (on back of yellow sheet)
2. Essay (300 word minimum) on what you learned, how you now feel about the profession, are you suited to this career, etc.
If you didn't get the 8 interview questions composed in class, here they are (you make up 2 of your own)
    1. What got you interested in this career? Was there a person who inspired you?
    2. What education and ongoing training is required?    
    3. What do you enjoy most about this career? What do you enjoy least?
    4. Describe your daily / weekly / yearly (time off - vacations) schedule.
    5. What is starting salary in this field? Top salary?
    6. What people skills does this career require? What other skills are beneficial to this career?
    7. What have you learned from this career?
    8. What advice can you give me about this career? about choosing a career? about life?
You are to come up with 2 more questions for a total of 10. Feel free to adapt/change these questions to fit your interview.

    After reading "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" p.55, write your own sermon, rebuttal-style,
        called "Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God"
        Include two figures of speech - a simile and a metaphor   (underline them)     
        Work a Bible text (words and reference) into the sermon
due Mon, Sept 15 (for those going on Leadership Conference); others can turn it in Wednesday
   Read the excerpt that begins on pg 911 by Wright
    -Compare/contrast yourself to Wright, according to what you learn about him from the excerpt (not just his biographical page)
    -You must be specific as you compare in these three areas - experiences, personalities, goals, using a quote from the story in EACH area to support your points about Wright. Put the quotation from the story in "quotation marks."
    -This should be on one sheet, with at least three paragraphs, at least 300 words (if typed, use 1.5 line spacing)

   Read the stories / excerpts that begin on pg 24 (Bradford) and pg 42 (Knight)
    -Contrast Bradford and Knight - their personalities, their experiences, their writing styles (be specific!)
    -These two authors give us a glimpse of what it must have been like to explore America. Now write a creative writing essay or short-short story called "_____________________ (insert your name here), the Adventurer"
    -This should all be on one sheet, at least two paragraphs, at least 300 words (if typed, use 1.5 line spacing)

    CW Thanks -- Your assignment is to make a list of 50 things you are THANKFUL FOR
    -This list must be typed - on one page - two columns (you may need to use smaller-than-usual font and margins)
    -Use your creativity and uniqueness to make your list
    -There should be only 10 in the people category
    -You can get 1 - 2 extra credit points if you do 60 - 70 goals

due Mon, Aug 25
    This assignment is the springboard from which you will choose the book you will cover for your book presentation (see blue handout sheet for rubric / criteria and list of possible books).
    Choosing an author whose writings you enjoy will make the book presentation much more meaningful.
    Skim through the Adventures in American Literature textbook, checking out the pages that give author information.
    For 8 different authors whom you think are interesting, write about their lives and their writings.  Set it up like this:
        1. Author's name (dates that person lived)
            a)  life info (2 interesting, information-filled sentences - in your words)
            b)  writings info - style, subjects, voice, best-known work(s) (2 interesting, information-fillled sentences in your words)
        From these authors, choose 3 books (see blue list), and read about these books on internet, then give the title and author
        and sentences about the plot. Set it up like this-
        1. book title and author - 2 interesting, info-filled sentences (in your words) about the plot (what the book is about).
